Safe and Healthy Schools
At Grand County School District, we strive to provide a strong learning foundation for the youth in our community, based on our whole child, whole school, and whole community approach. We work toward ensuring that students become the next generation of compassionate and resourceful leaders, and it is our goal to provide a safe and engaging environment that promotes a lifelong passion for learning among our students. Our mission is to put each student first every day.
As a district, we are improving our safety and wellbeing practices K-12. One crucial improvement strategy is to implement an online reporting system in which students and parents can report incidents of bullying and harassment. . While we have always encouraged students, parents and guardians to report these sorts of incidents, this online form is intended to encourage, normalize and ease the reporting process so that we can ensure the safety and well being of all students at Grand County School District. Creating this online reporting system is key to preventing and responding to bullying and harassment by empowering students to “see something-say something,” and protect the reporter from possible fear of retribution.
GCSD has created a simple reporting system that can be accessed from all school and district websites and allows students, parents, guardians, staff and community members to efficiently report when bullying and harassment occurs so that the school or district can properly investigate and resolve every incident. Submissions will be sent directly to each school’s administrators and school based therapists to be promptly investigated. If the allegation is substantiated, school administrators will follow GCSD policy FDAG with an action plan available on the GCSD website under “policies.”
GCSD will also continue to use the SafeUT app for reporting and support. SafeUT app provides a way to connect to licensed counselors that are ready to listen to any sized crisis or concern. This resource is immediate and confidential. A reporter may use either reporting system. By pairing this statewide resource, and local reporting GCSD form, we hope to support and meet the needs of students.
Beyond these technical and policy driven changes, all stakeholders in the lives of the children of Grand County need to work together to not only protect our children from harassment and bullying, but honor and respect who they are, where they come from, and what they believe. Continuing to place an emphasis on compassion, empathy, and social perspective taking will strengthen the ties of our small community and allow us to inspire and support all students to achieve their academic and social potential.
