Description
The Native American Club Leader is responsible for leading one club session for each school site weekly at Helen M. Knight Elementary, Margaret L. Hopkin Middle School and Grand County High School, in addition they are in charge of organizing and facilitating events for families and students on occasional weekends and evenings.
The Native American Club leader is a multi-faceted position charged with providing cultural education, academic assistance, facilitating connection with local opportunities and adult mentors, and building connections for Native American, Alaskan, and Hawaiian students with one another across Grand County School District.
Native American Clubs at Grand County School District are partner clubs of BEACON Afterschool. BEACON provides snacks, access to district vehicles and transportation options, and access to training opportunities/professional development. In turn the Native Club leader must attend BEACON systems training and follow sign in, safety and other protocols as assigned by BEACON.
This position is 20 hours per week and runs Monday-Friday following the Grand County School District school calendar year. Normal position hours are four days a week from 1:00 - 5:00 pm which includes one hour per day of paid on-site prep time. Three of those days will be club facilitation days and one day a week will be spent in the office planning with Title VI Coordinator. Additional hours will be utilized for training, and to facilitate special events such as family nights, field trips, college visits, and fundraisers, as well as attending monthly parent committee meetings and other occasional district meetings.

Job Functions

Create and implement activities for weekly club meetings
Work alongside Title VI Coordinator to plan family events and fundraisers and help identify community resources
Work as an advocate for Native student academic success alongside parents, principals, counselors and teachers. Ensure native students are connected with needed academic supports and assistance
Use district and Title VI Parent Committee goals as a guide for program planning
Stay current on issues pertaining to the educational needs of American Indian youth.
Occasionally assist with preparation of grant applications, program evaluations, and other reports
Attend BEACON systems training and follow sign in, safety and other protocols as assigned by BEACON
Attend Parent Committee Meetings monthly
Follow through with commitment to program schedule for the whole school year

Skills and Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED required
Experience working with youth of varying age groups
Knowledge of American Indian history, culture, and sovereignty
Knowledge of issues pertaining to the educational needs of American Indian youth
Proficiency in native language (such as Navajo or Ute) is desirable
Ability to work independently and communicate effectively as needed
Ability to work collaboratively and individually on assigned tasks
Skilled in the use of technology and instructional media tools
Strong verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrates leadership, initiative and self direction
Ability to travel between offices, schools, and community resource locations
Must be able to be fingerprinted and clear a criminal background check

While performing the duties of this job, the Native American Club Leader is regularly required to speak and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, or crouch. Occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
