Description
Under the supervision of the Principal and/or Head Custodian, the Custodian keeps the building and surrounding grounds clean and in good repair. May be assigned specific areas to keep clean. Incumbent performs general and seasonal clean-up tasks as they arise and as time permits. May be assigned an evening shift, which requires checking and maintaining the security of the building.
• Attend District training to receive instructions on safe cleaning practices.
• Performs general cleaning duties of building, including and not limited to the following:
• Sweep, scrub, buff and polish floors. Clean and vacuum rugs and carpets. Empty garbage and clean garbage cans. Wash desks, chairs, counters, walls and other surfaces. Dust and polish furniture and woodwork. Clean and polish inside and outside windows and classroom doors. During summer maintenance clean and polish metal work and clean blinds.
• Clean and disinfect restrooms and drinking fountains. Stock towel and soap dispensers. Stock hand sanitizer dispensers.
• Clean up after children who are ill or injured.
• Set up tables and chairs for school meals and assist with cleanup.
• May be assigned to clean and maintain a specific area of the building or grounds.
• Provides care of grounds. Supervise and assist with outside building maintenance, including leaf, weed, snow, ice, debris removal. Sweep, pick up debris, empty garbage cans.
• Performs proper maintenance on equipment (e.g. vacuum, carpet extractor, floor machine and
buffer). Replace light bulbs. Assist with painting and minor carpentry projects. Make minor non-technical repairs.
• Reports larger repair problems to Lead Custodian and/or Principal. Report safety, sanitary and fire hazards. Inspect facilities. Assist with fire drills.
• Work with main office secretary to maintain and plan for schedules of building use on a daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and yearly basis so that the school is cleaned and maintained on a regular basis and when events occur. Assist in moving/loading/transporting furniture, equipment, supplies and materials. Setup gym for special events.
• Order or assist in ordering, receive orders, distribute and maintain inventory of disposable school custodial supplies.
• Assists with security of assigned area by locking doors and windows.
• May be assigned to lock doors, perform security check, and set alarm system after school hours.
• Must demonstrate competence in reading, writing, and basic mathematics.
• Predictable and reliable attendance.
• Drive various District vehicles.
During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
• No specific education requirement, but must demonstrate ability to read and write English at a level required for successful job performance.
• Hold and maintain a Utah Driver's License.
• One year of experience in janitorial, custodial or similar manual work.
• Ability to communicate effectively in order to follow oral/written directions and specific rules, regulations and processes and apply them to a variety of situations.
• Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.
• Must demonstrate competence in reading, writing and math.
• Requires basic mechanical aptitude.
• Requires ability to follow directions and interact well with co-workers, students
• Requires skill in problem solving and prioritizing tasks. Must complete tasks in a timely, efficient manner.
NOTE: The Administration reserves the right to require specific training for this position. However, depending upon the type and quality of prior work experience and availability of formal training programs, some exchanges can be made between training and experience.
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:
• Previous experience in the public school system or institute of higher education.
• A general knowledge of commercially modern and safe cleaning techniques.
• Ability to prioritize multiple tasks.
• Ability to exercise sound judgement and work independently.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS---Not limited to the following:
• Job involves physical effort and stamina (e.g. bending, lifting, and shoveling).
• Physical ability to perform the essential functions listed above with or without reasonable accommodation.
• Requires the ability to lift a minimum of ten (10) pounds.
SPECIFICALLY FOR THIS POSITION
• Facility to see/read fine print and work with small component parts.
• Demonstrate normal depth perception.
• Manual dexterity to manipulate small objects and handle tools safely.
• Facility to drive a car, pickup truck or other vehicle.
