Nutrition & Food Services

Welcome to the GCSD Food & Nutrition Service Page

We thank you for the opportunity to serve your children and the trust you put in us to feed them wholesome, well balanced nutritious school meals. We care about your children's health and strive to improve our menus continuously. Your suggestions and concerns are welcome and we invite you to be involved in our school meal programs. The health issues that are occurring in our nation such as children with hypertension, diabetes and obesity are rising at alarming rates.

We encourage parents and family members to be proactive in your child's life by:
  • Overseeing their eating habits and making sure they are in good physical condition,
  • By getting exercise every day.
  • Encourage your children to play outdoors in the fresh air and
  • Teaching them to make wise choices in the food they eat.
Most of the processed foods our children consume today are not wholesome. They are filled with by-products and high in sodium which contributes to hypertension. We as a team are working to reduce the use of these items, but we need help from parents and other family members. You can do this by encouraging your children to try new unfamiliar foods, eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, try whole grain menu items, and drink lower fat milks.

Offer Verses Serve

What is this and how does it work?

Offer versus serve is an option within the national school lunch and breakfast programs administered by the United States Department of Agriculture, which allows students to choose less than all the food items in a meal pattern.

Under the Offer verses Serve provision, students may decline up to two of the required food items offered in the reimbursable lunch, and one of the four required food items offered in the reimbursable breakfast. The item for lunch that they cannot refuse is the entree. For those who would like a vegetarian choice we will accommodate them also, but we do need to have an idea of how many students are vegetarians to meet their needs and to meet the nutrient standards planning. High schools must provide OVS method to their students. We at GCSD offer this in each school. By offering food choices, the food service programs hopes to have students save school districts money by taking only those items they know they will eat. This avoids over purchasing and extra disposal costs which indirectly affects your pocket book and ours.

Parents Must Provide a Lunch

Parents who choose not to purchase a school lunch must send a lunch with their children. Children who are not sent with a lunch or money to purchase a lunch will be reported to the Principal. Parents will be warned to send a lunch for their student.

  • Free and reduced applications can be turnedit any time dirung the year. If any cirsumstances change in your household please fill out an application.

  • If your child has special dietary needs due to allergies or religious beliefs please submit a Special Dietary Request Form.
"Juice will no longer be substituted for milk. Milk has to be replaced with an item of the same nutrient value. Children do not have to take a milk if they are lactose intolerant. They have 3 other choices to choose from. If we do choose to replace the milk it will depend on the cost of that item and nutrient qualifications. Parents may opt for sending a replacement with their child."
